Hi,
Egypt is having it's two ISPs block/terminate connections to the signal
servers. The country of origin for the phone number itself doesn't
Well, well, well... it seems we need Tor support for Signal now.

Hi,
sadly my comrade,
you can't resolve political problem with technical solution.
It is true, but against oppressive regime you do not have other
(political) means for resolving political problem.

Besides, isn't encryption a technical solution to political problem of
eavesdropping? :-)
but we have to tor-try .
Unfortunately, it is the only option, since people does not have equal
means as government does.

M.

Forgive my ignorance but Signal already "supports" Tor in that a network or device proxy will work, I'm thinking orbot or a raspberry pi forcing traffic over Tor.How this is implemented within the signal app is where the hard questions are.
Tor without bridges is very ineffective for this kind of censorship, look at what happened earlier this month with Belarushttps://ooni.torproject.org/post/belarus-fries-onion
Essentially you'll want orbot within Signal or the ability for the user to use tor, change your tor settings such as new circuits or to use or not use a bridge, requesting new bridges etc.And should this be done on a whole app level or by conversation? Alice and Bob in Egypt would probably need to Tor all conversations but Charlie the reporter outside of Egypt may only need to Tor his conversion to Bob..
Adding VPN or Tor support is a no brainer, how a user uses it with as little friction as possible isnt so easy--

more about that in OWS blog post: https://www.whispersystems.org/blog/doodles-stickers-censorship/

From what I read in the commit
(https://github.com/WhisperSystems/Signal-Android/commit/541718fd114a6f2336222a571869e1056cd122dd),
Signal looks to the registered phone number to decide if it should
connect to the normal server or a Google redirector.
However, suppose I go to Egypt with Signal registered to my Dutch
phonenumber, I assume it will not work then?
